Results of offering fish pieces to our Kookaburras

We have been offering pieces of Carp to our Kookaburras .   Carp is an introduced pest species found in our waterways in this part of the world.   It is causing major problems for our native fish such as the Murray Cod.

We have found that our Kookaburras will readily take fish pieces provided they the pieces are small enough for them to handle but we have some doubts about continuing with this food source.

The downside is that it is awfully smelly, even when fresh, not that the birds object but the smell tends to permeate the whole neighbourhood.    You can smell it some distance away from the aviaries and unfortunately it is one of those smells that lingers and is hard to get out of the nostrils.

So on balance, although as a food source it is good we will only use it as a back up or for variety on odd occasions.
