The Wombat

For some inexplicable reason, the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat is notoriously difficult to breed in captivity, so we are very proud to have had the pleasure of this rare achievement.

Pictured above is the result of years of hard work. A pouch bulge was first noticed mid February 1996 and the young joey first emerged from the pouch on July 11th 1996. At the time the photo was taken Mum (Wombles) was 34kgs and Baby (Basil) was about 5kgs. Since this time, three of our adult female animals have produced a further thirty offspring between them but for some strange reason Wombles has only ever produced the one (tried it and didn't like it, maybe!!!!). Wombles is now heading into her 28th year and is starting to look her advancing years.
