Pictured above
is the result of years of hard work. A pouch bulge was first noticed
mid February 1996 and the young joey first emerged from the pouch on July
11th 1996. At the time the photo was taken Mum (Wombles) was 34kgs
and Baby (Basil) was about 5kgs.
Since this time, three of our adult female animals have produced a further
twenty four offspring between them.
Due
to the ongoing drought we are currently experiencing, we have had a huge
influx of orphaned wildlife over the last couple of years, including
nineteen joey kangaroos and two wombats. We do not know if
this is due to the drought, but we assume that as animals move around
looking for a feed they fall foul of human activities, finding
themselves straying into areas they have never been before.
We are now heading for our third year of drought. As we move
into June 2008, we have still not had any rain to speak of, (only 36mm
for the year to date) and if we do not get good rains within the next
month or so we are going to find ourselves with a problem. Not good
for neither man nor beast!
Wombat Rise Sanctuary is not funded or sponsored
by any organisation and we endeavour to keep our animals in good health
on a small retirement income and with the generous assistance of
like-minded people.
